A new drug from Canada is getting the green light for a long-term treatment for erectile dysfunction, researchers say.
The Canadian government is now warning that it will not cover a large share of the cost of erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, the little blue pill for impotence.
The drugs are popular among patients who take the little blue pill for erectile dysfunction, according to the Canadian Medical Association.
The government also wants to ensure that doctors will only prescribe the drugs to patients with underlying health conditions.
Doctors can prescribe the drugs for a wide range of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure and some cancers.
But they can't prescribe Viagra or its generic equivalent, called sildenafil, for any patient with erectile dysfunction.
"In general, the Canadian government does not support the practice of doctors prescribing Viagra or sildenafil," said Dr. Andrew Fleming, a urologist and professor at the University of Toronto.
"However, the availability of generic versions of sildenafil in Canada is very important for health and safety. Viagra, for example, is available for the generic sildenafil at a lower cost than the branded versions."
The drugs are already available in Canada as part of a health plan that would cover them, Fleming said.
Since the government was unable to determine the true costs of the drugs, the new drug will remain in the country.
The new drug would have been needed to treat a type of erectile dysfunction that affects millions of men in the U. S.

"We are not saying it is a cost-free option for people to take, but the government needs to be aware of that," he said.
A Canadian physician has been asked to step down as chair of the Health Advisory Committee to allow him to continue as the country's health minister.
"The drug will not be available for patients with a pre-existing condition, or a type of chronic disease, because that is a public health issue and not an approved treatment for a medical condition. There will be no cost to the public if the drugs are not approved," Fleming said.
The government has yet to see a specific decision made by the Health Advisory Committee.
"We have to take the opportunity to make sure that we do not lose our opportunity to be fair, to have the best and most effective care possible," he said.
The drug will be sold by Canada, or by an online pharmacy.
It is also available as a generic version of Viagra, the same drug as Pfizer's blockbuster drug Viagra.
"We have a lot of money on our hands," Fleming said.
He said that the Canadian government should also work to make sure that the drugs are safe and effective.
The drug is expected to hit the market in Canada in the spring of 2023, Fleming said.
"The drug is a first-in-class medicine and has been a key player in the global market for years," he said.
